Teaching Practices and Students

Claughton Medical Centre is a training/teaching practice. Fully qualified doctors are attached to the practice for 6 - 12 months to gain valuable experience in general practice. Registrars have a great deal of hospital experience and bring a new enthuiastic approach to the care we provide. They are under the supervision of partners at all times.

We also have medical students from liverpool University attached to our practice for short periods. They learn about general practice through observing consultations - with the patient's consent - and attending other various clinics.

Information
Appointments

The practice runs an appointment system for all doctors. Appointments can be made by telephoning or calling into reception. If you wish to see a particular doctor you are advised to make the appointment at least three days in advance.

If you wish to make an earler or later appointment, again, it is advisable to book in advance. When making an appointment you will be offered the next available appointment. If you need an urgent appointment you will be seen the next day, but we cannot guarantee the doctor of your choice as you will be fitted in whereever possible.

If you are unable to keep an appointment please let us know in advance so we can then offer this appointment to another patient.

If you wish to speak to the doctor by telephone, please ring after the morning surgery, which usually finishes around 11.45am.

Home Visits

Patients who are too ill to attend the surgery may request home visits. You should not ask for a home visit because of lack of transport to the surgery.

If you require a home visit please ring the surgery before 10.00am if possible so the doctors can plan their visits. Most visits will be done following morning surgery, around lunchtime.

When you request a home visit the receptionist will ask a number of questions including the patient's details, address and the nature of the problem. This is required so the doctors can prioritise the visits according to the urgency of the problem.

When the surgery is closed / Weekend Cover
A doctor is always available when the surgery is closed. If you need urgent advice outside normal surgery hours please ring the usual surgery number 652 1688. A recorded message will advise you of the number of the doctor on call. The GP Out of Hours Service will usually provide cover when the practice is closed. This service is for emergencies only. Any routine problems or enquiries will be dealt with by the practice during normal opening hours.
Repeat Prescriptions

If you are on medication that the doctor has advised you to continue you can request repeat prescriptions in the following ways:

  • Telephone in on the usual surgery number - 652 1688 between 9.00am and 5.00pm
  • Hand in your repeat prescription request either over the reception counter or in the post box outside.
  • Send in your request and either collect the prescription by hand or include a SAE if you would like you prescription posting back to you.

We request that you order your prescription at least 24 hours in advance before you run out of your medication. Please check that your repeat prescription does not show the message 'Your treatment must be reviewed by your Doctor', as this means that the doctor may need to see you before any more medication is issued. Please discuss this with the receptionist if you are unsure. When ordering medication please have all the details ready, as the receptionist may not be able to deal with your enquiry if you do not have all the information.

Test Results
Following any tests taken at the surgery or x-rays, you will be advised to contact us at a later date. We are happy to inform you of the result by telephone. Please ring for results during the afternoon, by which time they will have been seen and checked by the doctor.
Accidents and Emergencies

If the accident obviously requires hospital treatment (eg broken limbs or foreign body in the eye) please go to a casulaty department. There are two casualty departments on the Wirral: one at Arrowe Park Hospital, Upton and one at Victoria Central Hospital, Wallasey. Please note that the casualty department at Victoria Central is open Monday to Friday between 9.00am and 5.00pm and for minor injuries only, but is not as busy as Arrowe Park and therefore the waiting times may be shorter.

Change of Address
Please notify the surgery if you change your address or name. It is important that we have up-to-date details and contact numbers. If you move outside the practice area you may be asked to change your doctor, as you are no longer in our area and home visits may be difficult.

Confidentiality
All patient records re confidential; we cannot disclose any information to a third party without written consent form the patient. This also includes computerised records. We are registered under the Data Protection Act.

Complains
If you are dissatisfied with any aspect of our service please let us know so we can put it right. We hae an in-house complaints procedure and we will fully investigate all complaints. We hope that all complaints can be dealt with in-house, but in the event of you not being satisfied with our response it is your right to take up the matter with the Wirral Health Authority.
