THE CANCER REHABILITATION SUPPORT
TEAM CReST
Core
Purpose
- To deliver a
quality service to patients with cancer through the provision of specialist
expertise and interventions
- To provide a supportive
environment where service can be developed through research, education,
and expert clinical practice, promoting change through the delivery
of evidence based practice.
Cancer
Rehabilitation (Dietz 1981)
The goal of rehabilitation
for people with cancer is to improve their quality of life for maximum
productivity with minimum dependency, regardless of life expectancy. The
rehabilitation process for cancer patients can be defined in four stages
and the patient can move between any or all of these stages:
- Preventative Rehabilitation
- treatment in anticipation of potential disability to lessen severity
- Restorative Rehabilitation
- to enable clients to return to their premorbid status with minimal
handicap
- Supportive Rehabilitation
- to support clients through their decline, the disease being progressive
but stabilised, so they can remain as functional as possible, retaining
choice and control.
- Palliative Rehabilitation
- to assist in symptom control, the disease being progressive and in
its advanced stages, to prevent or minimise associated complications
and maintain a quality of life.
