FINANCIAL POSITION

The charity had another successful year in terms of income received, due primarily to the generosity of patients, their relatives and friends.

During the year the total value of the fund increased by £245,000 to £1,790,000. The increase was as a result of-

  • The good performance of funds invested increasing the market value of investments by £281,000.
  • Increasing income above 1997/98 levels whilst maintaining a similar level of expenditure resulting in net incoming resources of £164,000.

The table below provides a summary of the financial activities of the charity over the last three years. It is worth noting that the total expenditure on research (including equipment) has increased on the 1997/98 level, but is significantly less than in 1996/97. The main reason for the reduction in research expenditure between 1996/97 and 1997/98 was the transfer of all externally sponsored clinical trials support from the charity to the Trust This action was taken to comply with the Charities Act (I 993) and improve administrative efficiency.
