Clinical Governance On April 1, 1999, CCO was required to put in place structural arrangements to achieve sound Clinical Governance within the Trust. Clinical Governance is defined by the Department of Health as "the framework through which NHS organisations are accountable for continuously improving the quality of their services and safeguarding high standards of care by creating an environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish." A Clinical Practice Development Unit was established at CCO to oversee and co-ordinate a range of activities to ensure that we do achieve Clinical Governance. The Unit, led by a consultant clinical oncologist and supported by a nurse and a therapy radiographer, has had a busy year, building upon the developments already in progress and initiating new programmes.
