HAVING A BONE SCAN

Introduction

Your doctor has arranged for you to have a bone scan, which will take place in the Nuclear Medicine Department (the MRI staff are pictured right), located in the Diagnostic Imaging Department at Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology. You probably have some questions so we hope that this section will explain:

  • what a bone scan is
  • what to expect during the procedure
  • how long the scan will take
  • when you will receive the results

If you have any questions at any time, please do not hesitate to ask.

Some important points

  • Please telephone the department before you attend for advice if you are breast-feeding or if you know or suspect you are pregnant. If you are pregnant, the doctor may decide to cancel the scan in some circumstances.
  • You may drive, eat, drink, and take your medicines on the day of your scan.
  • You may bring someone with you but waiting space is limited. Please do not bring young children or pregnant friends
