1998/1999 Annual Review

During the year 1998/99, CCO has seen a number of significant developments take place

The North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre will be opening shortly in June 2000. A clinical transition team has been working for some time to ensure the smooth transfer of services with the aim of minimising disruption and uncertainty for patients.

An evaluation of the current position of the Trust in relation to its anticipated position in 3 years time has been carried out and culminated in the ‘CCO 2000 & Beyond Strategy’.

In November 1998, the Trust launched two major integrated projects, a review of operational processes (R.O.S.E.) and a major computer systems procurement to address some of the issues identified in the CCO 2000 & Beyond Strategy.

The R.O.S.E. project, supported externally involved many staff from various departments and examined the effectiveness of our services, looking to make improvements in the ways we organise the delivery of patient care.

The computer systems procurement project has been set up to replace the patient administrative systems and equipment, with comprehensive solutions to provide immediate benefits in supporting the care of our patients. Over a period of time the solutions will be developed to build an electronic patient record, which we expect to be part of a ‘local strategy’, in line with the government strategy ‘Information for Health’.

The clinical governance agenda has started to gain momentum. The Medical Director has been identified as the senior clinician responsible for clinical governance and will work closely with the Director of Research and Development. This development will provide the opportunity for clinical audit, risk management and professional development to come under the one umbrella of continual improvement in the quality of our services.

The implementation of the Calman/Hine report during the year saw further developments within the tumour specific groups and the national launch of the Regional Nursing and Professions Allied to Medicine Care Pathways for lung, breast, colo-rectal and palliative care. Many staff at the CCO have been involved in their development and reflect a collaborative approach by health professionals across the Region.

It was with great pleasure that it was announced that Gill Oliver, our Director of Patient Services was awarded a DBE, reflecting her commitment to the NHS and to the patients’ position in particular.

On 5th July 1998, CCO participated in the festivities to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the NHS. Staff from several departments were involved in putting together a display of photographs illustrating the services we have provided to patients over the years.

In closing, the Board would like to express its thanks to all staff for their commitment and support in providing the services and care required to our patients.
