Information Governance - Protecting your Privacy

Information has been described as the "life-blood of any major organisation" and the NHS is continually working to standards to ensure that the correct information is delivered to the appropriate people in a timely manner. Less dramatically, accurate information is required to support efficient and fair services provision. It goes without saying that confidentiality underpins the NHS and information given in confidence is an important aspect of quality of care. There are many initiatives, both nationally and locally, being undertaken to ensure that this remains a priority. Information Governance is a national initiative that allows organisations and individuals to ensure that personal information is dealt with legally, securely, efficiently and effectively, in order to deliver the best possible care. IG is a framework that will bring together all of the requirements, standards and best practice that apply to the handling of personal information.

The Information Governance Toolkit is the first phase of the initiative and will be launched on 31 October 2003. The Toolkit is an Internet based tool and will bring together in one place information and activities required to support:

Data Protection
Freedom of Information 2000
