The Rosebrae Project

This project runs in partnership with a local hostel providing supported housing to single homeless people with a variety of special needs including ex offenders and people with drug and alcohol problems. The scheme provides a low dose, daily pick up regime of methadone mixture. The scheme cannot address fully a clients complete drug problem, but reports to date are extremely favourable.

The scheme has brought an element of stability
to the hostel where once there were many problems related to drug misuse;

dealing, theft etc. Discharge figures for the hostel also clearly indicate that since the schemes inception, April 1999, returns to custody
have reduced by over 33% and the amount of discharges to supported single accommodation has doubled.

The Alcohol Project

As many Drug Agencies are aware alcohol and its associated risks when used with methadone/heroin is a growing problem. The number of clients giving serious cause for concern is gradually growing. Deterioration in health, a decline in social functioning and an inability of either clients or workers to access appropriate services. Commissioning
  standard 11 (Substance Misuse Advisory Service) clearly states the need for local services to address this clearly identified group, i.e. those suffering from drug and alcohol dependence co-morbidity problems. This service has just started a joint working group with Wirral Alcohol Service with a clearly identified cohort of 20 clients with severe drinking problems. This group do not engage with the more usual existing alcohol service provision and it seemed at times
that a drug unit like ours could do little to help other than make sure their methadone levels were low enough to stop overdose. Not ideal and not always helpful. The plan now will be to keep their methadone levels stable and help with the alcohol problem only. We will post up any information and outcomes at a later date.

At January 2002 the waiting time for treatment was 2 weeks.
