| Syringe Exchange Schemes have played
a vital part in reducing the spread of HIV and Hepatitis B
in the Cheshire area. Promoting healthy behaviour amongst
injecting drug users who are reluctant to present at drug
services requires the development of a co-ordinated harm reduction
strategy on a community-wide level. |

Thora MacAteer co-ordinates
the supply of injecting equipment to 35 pharmacies in
Cheshire and Wirral. Injecting equipment is supplied
in packs containing 1ml, 2ml and 5ml, antiseptic wipes
and a sharps bin. The service supplied 50,000 of these
packs last year and has distributed 38,000 packs so
far this year. |
