Agenda for change

The name given to the project to modernise the NHS pay system, agreed by the NHS and unions. The term Agenda for change came from a document produced in 1999 detailing proposals from the fourth health departments across the UK to modernise the NHS pay system.

Assimilation

This is the stage that follows job evaluation and your post is placed into one of the eight new pay bands. When assimilation occurs you will be informed of your pay and terms and conditions.

Dimension

Elements that make up a job. There are six dimensions within the knowledge and skills framework that are regarded as Core i.e. applicable to everyone’s job such as communications; and further 16 that are specific.

Factor

There are 16 factors within job evaluation that your job will be measured or evaluated against. These include communication skills, mental effort and whether you have the freedom to act. A points score is given against each factor and the total number of points out of all 16 factors will determine which pay band your job will be assimilated to.

Job Evaluation

This examines the knowledge, skills and effort needed to do every job. Job Evaluation will determine which pay band jobs should be placed.

Knowledge and Skills Framework

Knowledge and Skills Framework, this gives each job an outline of the necessary skills and knowledge required for the post and will eventually provide the basis for future pay increases.

Matching panels

Groups of Trust and union representatives who match posts to national job profiles

National job Profiles

These are nationally agreed job descriptions for common NHS jobs.

Pay Bands

These are eight new pay bands under Agenda for Change that all NHS posts, apart from executive directors, dentists and doctors, will be placed.

Pay Points

Within each pay band there is a pay scale, which contains a number of pay points.

Recruitment and Retention Premia

Recruitment and Retention Premia (or RRP as it is commonly referred to) are additional payments for particular groups of staff. PCTs will be able to use these premia to address recruitment and retention difficulties caused by external labour market pressures
