Resuscitation Talks

Children's Outpatient Department and Day Ward Staff give resuscitation talks to carers prior to Apnoea Alarms being issued.

What is an apnoea alarm?
An apnoea alarm monitors each breath that your baby takes. If your baby stops breathing (apnoea attack) or breathes less than 10 breaths per minute, the alarm will sound and a red alarm light will flash on the monitor.

An alarm does not prevent an apnoea attack, but lets you know if your baby has stopped breathing.

How does it work?
A sensor is attached to your baby's tummy (abdomen), this connects to the apnoea monitor by a lead. Every time your baby takes a breath, the sensor sends a signal to the apnoea monitor. A light on the monitor will flash green every time your baby takes a breath. You will also hear a click each time your baby takes a breath.

On the Wirral a Care Of the Next Infant (CONI) programme is run. The co-ordinator liaises with us to organise the resuscitation talks for mothers on the CONI programme during their Ante-natal appointments if possible.

Resuscitation talks are given to any member of the family who wishes to attend.
