Going to Theatre

In this section we hope to provide you with answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about going for your operation. Please do not hesitate to ask your nurse about anything else that is concerning you.

CAN MY PARENTS/CARERS COME TO THE OPERATING THEATRE WITH ME?

Both parents/carers will be allowed to accompany you to the operating theatre. Most children are allowed to walk to theatre. Children who have had medicine to help them to relax must ride on a trolley to theatre to ensure their safety. Only one parent/carer will be allowed into the anaesthetic room.

WHAT CAN MY PARENT/CARER DO IN THE ANAESTHETIC ROOM?
In the anaesthetic room your parent/carer can stay beside you. Your parent/carer can hold your hand and talk quietly and calmly to you until

Holding hands
you have gone to sleep. When you are asleep they will be asked to leave, they may give you a kiss before they leave. The ward nurse will show them the way out of theatre and back to the ward.
WHO WILL BE LOOKING AFTER ME IN THEATRE?
You will be cared for by doctors, nurses and other theatre staff who specialise in the type of operation you are going to have. Every child receives individual care and attention.

HOW LONG WILL I BE IN THEATRE?

Some operations last several minutes, others take much longer. Your surgeon may be able to give you and your parents/carers an approximate length of time you will be in theatre.
WHAT CAN MY PARENTS/CARERS DO WHILST WAITING?
The ward nurse will accompany them back to the ward. If they wish, they may go to the cafe, which is situated at the front entrance. Your nurse will advise them what time to come back to the ward.
