Eating & Drinking before an Operation

It is very important that these rules are followed.

MORNING CASES
  • No milk or solids after 3.00am on the morning of surgery (Under 2's only).
  • May have a drink of water or juice on waking, to be completed by 6.00am on the morning of surgery.
  • No chewing gum, sweets or lollipops.

 

Milk and Apple
AFTERNOON CASES
  • Normal breakfast must be taken before 7.00am on the day of surgery.

  • May have juice or water, but not milk or solids, up till 11.00am. 

  • No chewing gum, sweets or lollipops.

This advice is provided by the Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Royal College of Nursing.
