After the Operation

In this section we hope to provide you with answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about what happens after your operation. Please do not hesitate to ask your nurse about anything else that is concerning you.

WHERE DO I GO AFTER THE OPERATION?
When the operation is over, you will be transferred from the operating theatre to a recovery area. A recovery nurse will look after you until you wake up, you will never be left alone. You may have monitoring or other equipment attached to your hand or foot; this is usually to check your heart rate.
WHEN WILL I SEE MY PARENTS/CARERS?

Mohter And Child

The ward nurse will take your parents/carers with them to theatre to collect you. In Main theatre you will be brought out to your parents/carers from the recovery area. In Day theatre one or both parents/carers will be allowed into the recovery area.
WHAT CAN PARENTS/CARERS DO FOR THEIR CHILD?
Sometimes children can be upset when they first start to wake up. We encourage parents to speak quietly and touch their child gently as this helps to soothe and reassure. The nursing staff will be happy to answer any questions parents may have concerning their child’s recovery.
WHERE DO I GO AFTER THE RECOVERY ROOM?

You will be taken back to the Day Ward.

HOW WILL I BE?
Every child is different; and the speed of recovery is different for different operations. Some children are very sleepy, some complain of dizziness and other children appear awake and alert.
WHEN CAN I EAT AND DRINK?
Your parent/carer should always check with your nurse before they give you anything to eat or drink. Most children can have a drink of juice or water as soon as they are awake. Providing you do not vomit following the drink, you will be able to have some cereal or toast after half an hour.

WHEN CAN I GET OUT OF BED?
Some children are unsteady on their feet or feel dizzy after their operation. Most children are ready to get out of bed after they have had something to eat and drink. Your parent/carer should always check with your nurse before allowing you to get out of bed, you may need some assistance initially.
